1- Try taking your Hotspot with you.

2- Always say yes to a Virtual Private Network.

On Android, it is Settings> Wifi>:>Advanced> Wi-Fi notifications (turn it off)

On the iOS, go to settings>WiFi and check off ” Ask to join networks. It’s a good idea to assume that a place is safe itself.

4- Keep your OS and Apps Updated.
Updating your OS may be annoying but essential. Don’t be excited by a false sense of security just because you are a MAC or I phone user. The iOS 10.3.3 released in summer 2017 fixed a vulnerability that let hackers control phones remotely with the WiFi chips inside.

On iOS, go to the Settings>iTunes & App Store, and make sure “Updates” is turned on so that apps update themselves.
